As well as silence, another conclusion of Pierre’s dream is that he needs to connect or join up his ideas in some way. In the original there’s a play on words where the time to “сопрягать” “combine together” in the dream mixes with the very similar sounding “запрягать” time to “harness the horses” of the groom waking him up.
This is something that Tolstoy tends to do when there seems to be a mystical or supernatural experience happening — to provide an alternative down-to-earth explanation for where the information came from. So the words in the dream aren’t really coming from beyond the grave, but just slightly misheard versions of what’s being said right there in the room.
