Investigating the words that Rostov jumbles up while nearly falling asleep on his horse I came across this illustration of the hussar’s uniform. It includes the “tashka” a flat little monogrammed satchel bag which attached to the sword belt. (Sabretache in English) He mixes this up with Natasha (sister’s name) and tache (French: a patch or spot). I am worried about his lack of sleep — especially in the light of Kutuzov’s advice…that this was the most important thing before a battle.
