“Kaleidoscopic” is the right description for this multi-layered chapter. I thought the sound Andrei could hear “piti-piti-piti” was the sound of cockroaches and flies. But, according to this thorough description of Prokofiev’s War and Peace opera, it could be pure hallucination or tinnitus caused by the wound itself. Here is a sung version of the same scene.
