[spoiler alert — read today’s chapter first. I always assume that people read before looking at the commentaries, but today’s chapter (14 in my book) definitely contains a surprise ending]
Another philosophical question raised here is whether people can be valued in the same way as things. In the circumstances, Natasha’s approach to packing makes sense — leave out what is cheap and easily-replaced and wrap up the expensive and rare things with special care. When Bolkonsky’s carriage arrives it’s clear that he is a precious and fragile cargo.
But here’s the question: Does Andrei merit special care because he is seriously injured, or because he is seriously rich?
