That “mysterious, callous force which compelled people against their will to kill their fellow men” has always been one of the puzzles of morality to me. As a child I definitely believed in evil as thing that acted on the world. Later, I came to think of ideology as a more scientific explanation, which allowed everyone to consider themselves as good — regardless of what their actions were. Now I’m not so sure…beyond the 1% of the population who we are told, are psychopaths (over-represented in positions of power), there seems to be another (also fairly small in my experience) contingent of people who are just plain bad…
