There’s a theme of darting about in this chapter like the movements of the insects. This is just a quibble, but I’m pretty sure the Maudes’ translation got the middle one wrong though — “блохи, стрекозы, кузнецы” should be “fleas, dragonflies, grasshoppers” ….isn’t a grasshopper the same thing as a cricket?

Anyway they all have the characteristic of moving about in unpredictable leaps like the impatient Natasha…from Odessa to Madagascar, from a guitar string to an opera choir.
