I totally enjoy articles of this ilk, as it shows off the creative thought processes of the author. While you may or may not agree with some or any of the premises, or even the scope of the article, if the author likes the subject matter, the content usually shows it.
Having said that, I have an idea or ten why people aren’t into philosophy as a main driving force in their lives…
- Distractions
- Contemporaneous informational content
- Despair
The last one may make you scratch your head, but we in the Western world have been mired in a severe class-based system (capitalism) for the last century and a half. With very few openings for “class-smoothing,” i.e., lower classes seemingly having options to move up the class ladder (e.g., 1890–1906, the 1920’s, 1947–1970), people have been rightly concerned that philosophy and its musings are only meant for the privileged classes.
And that is really too bad.
