Day 008 — German language class starts
Yay, school has started.

Day 008 — German language class starts
10-August-1971 (Tue.)

My German language class started today.
From the blog.
Classes started. I have a teacher named Herr Albert S. I am in a level II course and I believe I am doing considerably well. The professor is very good and humorous. My conversations also seem to be getting better.
Marionhilferstrasse — very long street good for shopping and students.

Musings from the blog.
Summer German class. Classes were at the University of Vienna, just off the “Ring” (Ringstrasse). I remember that we could walk from the dorm along Kärtnerstrasse, past St. Stephans, up the Graben and through the Hofburg, then take a right through the parks or at the Ringstrasse to the university. Or we would walk or take a streetcar along the Ringstrasse to get to classes.
The center of Vienna is filled with history.
I appear to be enjoying the German language class and professor.
Summer Language courses. After my experience with this summer language course, I promised myself that I would return to Europe every year and take a one-month language course in every major city and country in Europe. I really loved this whole concept of learning languages while seeing a city up close and meeting new international friends. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Besides the expense, no job I ever had in the U.S. would allow me to take a month off every year to pursue such a venture. Europeans, I believe, had (and perhaps still have) the opportunity to spend more extended time in cities across Europe — their vacations are more suited to that possibility. I do see foreign language courses still offered online today in various cities.
The Ringstrasse. The Ringstrasse is the famed street that circles the inner city of Vienna. Most of the tourist landmarks of Vienna are on or nearby the Ringstrasse or within its boundary, called the Innere Stadt or Alte Stadt. The Ringstrasse construction was started in the mid-19th century by Emperor Franz Joseph I to replace the old city walls that surrounded medieval Vienna.
The photo in this post is one of the few pictures I have of the Ringstrasse. In it, we see a gentleman cleaning the streetcar lane with a “thatched” broom. This photo is near the University of Vienna.
Marionhilferstrasse. Back to normal life. I went shopping on one of the famous shopping areas in Vienna.
