Common. Happened to me repeatedly as a software consultant. I had too much work, so I raised my rates to astronomical values instead of say “no.” Turned out clients were willing to pay it, and simply expected value for it. I eventually went to a retainer model: You pay $X per month whether you have something for me to do or not…and clients loved it.
