What is school for?
Seth Godin inspires me to ask this question, “What is school for?”
Summary of Seth’s talk:
- School was made to train us to be compliant to support the industrial age ie factory worker and commodity consumer
- It makes us into commodities
- If the only thing we value the unique, we should stop valuing compliance
- Inspiring people about history with a text book is a bad idea. Does memorising baseball players in order of home runs inspire you to like baseball?
“Here is the key distinction.
What people do quite naturally is, if it’s work, they try to figure out how to do less.
And if it’s art, we try to figure out how to do more.”
