The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), an animal welfare organization, has raised concerns about Elon Musk’s brain implant company, Neuralink.

The group has claimed that the company may have “unsafely packaged and transported materials…carrying infectious pathogens,” specifically, implants that have been removed from the brains of monkeys during testing.

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) is now investigating Neuralink’s potentially illegal transport of hazardous pathogens.

In a letter sent to the Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, and the USDOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration, PCRM warned that Neuralink’s reckless handling of medical supplies posed a “serious and ongoing public health risk.”

The implants, for example, may have been contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as Staphylococcus, as well as viruses like Herpes B, which can cause pneumonia, bloodstream or wound infections, and meningitis.
