The whole series is one big fascinating point after another, but the extent to which North America (mostly the US) controls cheap calories in the world threw me for a loop. As Barnett mentions, wheat prices rose 100% in the 12 months up to the Arab Spring in the Middle East, where 80% of food is imported and people spend 80% of the income on food.
