Is the Scottish YES Movement in danger of imploding?

Scottish Referendum Ballot Paper 2014

The social media loud-mouth bully boys of YES will be the un-doing of indie movement, rather than anything being conducted by the Tory Party. The constant misguided anti-English rhetoric, the thinly veiled promotion of ‘blood nationalism,’ the fanning of the flames of civil war, the turning on anyone who isn’t running with the pack mentality and the general level of personal abuse, foul language & lack of respect for differing views are turning many people away.

Though they might be too afraid to voice their concerns and there’s a growing ‘silent minority’ made up of YES supporters who’ve gone quiet and those so sickened by the lack of tolerance they’ve walked away, though probably not for good. Hopefully most of these people will return when indieref2 is actually on the cards and a campaign gets going.

Civic Nationalism :

That said, it doesn’t look good for the indie movement and it’s time for all who believe in Civic Nationalism to stand up to the loud-mouths and bullies on their social posts and in the various groups. They hate to be challenged and will probably unfriend/block you, though the saddest part is the sheep who follow their every word will either gang up on you or unfriend you as well.

This fits in with typical cult behaviour, such as :

Group Think :

The group’s coherence is maintained by the observance to policies handed down from those in authority.
There is an internal enforcement of policies by members who reward “proper” behavior, and those who perform properly are rewarded with further inclusion and acceptance by the group.

Cognitive Dissonance :

Avoidance of critical thinking and/or maintaining logically impossible beliefs and/or beliefs that are inconsistent with other beliefs held by the group.
Avoidance of and/or denial of any facts that might contradict the group’s belief system.

Shunning :

Those who do not keep in step with group policies are shunned and/or expelled.

Let’s hope the vast majority of right-thinking YES supporters will keep upholding the values of civic nationalism, as they have done since 2014.
