One small point here - Spirit animals are not just a Native thing. “Totem” is a unique Ojibwe word, but spirit animals show up in countless cultures right back to ancient African stories of the shaman called “Mantis” - “Shaman,” for the record, actually being a Filipino word, in part referring to the practice animism. Then there are the Chinese Zodiac animals and the animal familiars of the Greek muses. I’m actually hard-pressed to think of a culture that doesn’t have some form of animism. Even Jesus is known as, “The Lamb.”
