Thanks for the thoughtful reply John. I think many of these problems stem from the fact that so many modern technologies are free and supported by ads. So designers have gone from thinking “let’s design something to improve someone’s lives so that they will buy it” to “let’s design something that people will become addicted to so that we can survive on ad revenue.” The change from getting people to adopt something once (buy it) to adopt something for as much of their free time as possible (and see as many ads as possible) is subtle but life changing. I work in technology and struggle with this same dilemma all the time.
