An interesting question is why you were “floored”? Why did a generation (or two) accept the idea that accumulation of wealth, cars, houses, corner offices, whatever, were more important than basic happiness? There was a time when the struggle was all there as — the game didn’t have other modes — but that’s really not true. There have always been people who did not accept the status quo and found happiness. Why did so many of us — the great majority — succumb to the siren song of materialism (right word?).
