Undo the damage of haste

I haven’t been getting enough sleep lately. It’s the result of juggling a demanding day job with a relentless passion for creativity. As the hour grows late each weeknight, a competition ensues. Between fatigue and art. Usually, art wins. Which is why I created the following video.

“Welcome to Weiss” from JohnPatrickWeiss.com

Does this sound like you? I’ll bet it does. Becuase I know there are a lot of other people just like me. People cursing that early morning alarm clock and shuffling off to work. Juggling papers and travel mugs of hot coffee. Enduring the slings and arrows of office politics, meetings, jousting personalities and infrequent wins. Not to mention scant raises.

Still, we go about our work. Pay our bills. Fulfill our obligations and be there for our loved ones. But oh, those few hours of escape in the evenings. Or the occasional window of time that opens up on weekends. When we get to settle into our creative passions and artful pursuits.

Today’s world is hard on craftsmen and artists. A world enraptured with STEM disciplines, technology economies and instant communication has lost its ability to slow down. To return to the rapture of quiet, artisanal immersion.

Be it the painter, writer, sculptor, musician, woodworker. Whatever the artful discipline, there are deep rewards and moments of timeless flow to be found.

So I appeal to you. Don’t give up. Sleep when you can. Shave off some time here and there. Pursue you rcreative dream. A little bit at a time. As they say, tornados and storms get all the press coverage, but termites do more damage.

Embrace Theodore Roethke’s wisdom. “Art is the means we have of undoing the damage of haste. It’s what everything else isn’t.”

Let your art win.
