Situated in Cheltenham, the Neptune Fountain is the town’s version of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy. Although there is a lack of historical verification of this claim, It’s believed the inspiration is after the famous former fountain. Alternatively, some sources suggest Bartolomeo Ammannati is the actual inspiration.

To commemorate the Greek God of the Seas, this impressive fountain depicts Neptune in a chariot drawn by four seahorses, accompanied by a merman blowing a conch shell. The immortal sits proudly atop the fountain, adorned in a mantle and wields a trident. The portrayal of the sea horses, with sculpted balusters and vases filled with flowers surrounding the fountain, further adds to its grandeur.

The sculptor behind this fountain is Yorkshireman Richard Lockwood Boulton (1832–1905). After Richard’s retirement in 1893, his four sons took over the family business and continued in their father’s legacy of sculpting and stone carving.
