Here is what may be considered an aside to this op/ed: The First Amendment provides freedom of religion. Yes, Americans have the right to worship how and whom or what we please. Now, take this interpretation to a court: the First Amendment provides freedom FROM religion. This is not generally, or ever, discussed, and certainly not in effete circles.
I am an atheist by measure. In other words, atheism makes sense to me. (Science asks questions. Religion does not.) Senseless to me is religion, or unsubstantiated and unprovable claims of supernatural creation. My beliefs too are protected and served by the First Amendment.
By the way, I was raised a Catholic. Yes, catholicism is the shortest route to atheism.
