I read that violence is the bankruptcy of ideas. I always laugh when I read of some legislative body in which several members join into a fist fight. These are our leaders?
Writers hold a similar position in society. Violent words lead to what?
I come from a journalism background and am appalled at how the standard for language in all parts of society has diminished. Does anyone besides me remember when the use of exclamation points were discouraged? How have we stepped upon a slippery slope?
Swear words can be used to good effect (especially comic effect) when used sparingly. But I simply will not read a piece that has four letter words in the title. The poverty of language is depressing.
We are supposed to be uplifting. Our language should reflect that. If you want to portray an ignoramus, what language would you use? Do you want to portray yourself in that light? Really? I won’t read you.
I find that a well constructed sentence, which artfully brings such words to mind, without actually using them, is much more witty, entertaining and thought provoking than taking the lazy route.
If others find it boring, so be it.
