LED headlights are more durable, more fuel-efficient and longer lasting than traditional halogen headlights or Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs. The downside is price: LED bulbs are more expensive.

LED Headlights Are Legal (but, Bad Installations Are Not)

LEDs are best suited for projector housings, allowing the light output to be focused. When an LED bulb is installed in a halogen reflector housing, the beam pattern effectively acts like a floodlight, causing glare and blinding oncoming traffic. Poor installations are one reason why rumors persist that LED headlights are illegal. They are legal indeed, but a vehicle might be ticketed or fail inspection if its headlamps are not installed properly.

Some older vehicles don’t have the proper housing for LED headlights, but they can accept retrofit bulbs or the housing can be modified with a kit.

What Are Adaptive LED Headlights?

Adaptive LED headlights, also known as digital matrix LED headlights, use cameras and a digital controller to adjust headlamps on a pixel by pixel basis. It’s a revolutionary new technology that can:

  • Curve lighting ahead of a turning vehicle;
  • Dim individual bulbs that may blind other drivers;
  • Optimize lighting for weather and road conditions; and even
  • Project images like a home theater projector (see a demo here).

However, smart LEDs headlights are not legal in the U.S. because of regulation FMVSS №108. Toyota has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to adapt this rule. The proposal is now being considered and, if successful, the change will bring adaptive driving beam equipment to the U.S. That said, this technology is still several years away from becoming an affordable aftermarket option.

How Much Do LED Headlights Cost?

A good LED headlight kit (with verified, above-average reviews) costs approximately $38, according to a 12-month analysis of price trends. Those same LED headlights cost around $29 while on sale: an average discount of 24%. Here are the best budget LED headlights for the money:

Methodology for Selecting Products

I use data science to discover above-average products that are selling for below-average prices. To find LED headlights with below-average prices, I first assemble a list of candidates, then organize those products by their 12-month average sale price, determine the median value and then exclude any lamp with a price above the mid-point.

To find headlights with above-average reviews, I measure the relationship between 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 star ratings and flag outliers that fall outside of a normal statistical distribution. I also discount paid, sponsored and unverified reviews as well as unhelpful review behaviors from verified customers. Models with an average adjusted rating of less than 3.9 out of 5 are excluded; in the end, fewer than 5% of the analyzed products remain.
