Thank You For Listening: a poem

Grateful for a joke

John Welford

--

Thank you for listening
Said the man on the podium
After everyone had fallen asleep
It was a joke, he didn’t mean it
He didn’t know what to say
So he told them he was grateful for their presence

Thank you for listening
Said the speaker on the phone
After the tenth person had hung up on him
It was a joke, he didn’t mean it
He didn’t know what to say
So he told them he was grateful for their presence

Thank you for listening
Said the woman in the mirror
After she had smeared all her makeup and broken her glass
It was a joke, she didn’t mean it
She didn’t know what to say
So she told herself she was grateful for her presence.
