It was his decision, not your decision that led to the chain of events. You did your job, had you not, you would have failed in your obligation to your entire class. He was treated as a first time offender and was a juvenile so he will have no permanent record as a result of this. If he is as smart as you say he was, he should have learned from this and chose a different path.
