STYLE INSIDER: MARA RHOMBERG
Mara Rhomberg has had her upbringing firmly ingrained in Hong Kong, daughter of Christian Rhomberg (owner of various lifestyle ventures such as the nostalgic and revered Kee Club and the more recent launch of seductive Izakaya restaurant, Koko). As well as being Creative Advisor to Christian’s ventures, Mara is also currently preparing the launch of her new contemporary women’s lifestyle, ready-to-wear brand and models in her spare time.
How would you describe your style?
I aspire to be effortlessly elegant but that doesn’t always work out! Sometimes there’s a lot of effort put into a look. I would say my style is very diverse. I always want to surprise people with something very different to what they would expect. Having said that, the most important for me is comfort. Not only the comfort of the garment but how I feel in my own skin.
What is your favourite designer and why?
Phhhh…. favourite designer! It’s so difficult to choose. Ultimately, it would be Azzedine Alaïa. Not necessarily because I would wear his pieces everyday, but because I feel he is one of the few designers left that is truly designing for women. What I also appreciate about Alaïa is that he has stayed true to his own identity, rather than feeling the need to adapt to current trends. He is revered for his independence and passion for discreet luxury and has successfully created a timeless style that is so iconic.
Who’s wardrobe would you love to see on HULA?
The Olsen twins. Simply because they were the earliest icons I was inspired by.
How do you see the future of fashion?
I feel it’s difficult to say where fashion is headed but where it should head is definitely a more sustainable direction. Where the pace of fashion would slow down, consumers are not only chasing for trend items, season after season. Where products should be produced with more integrity and intention into quality. Consumers should also become more confident in their own purchases rather than feeling dedicated or influenced by deemed trends. ;Currently, fashion is moving at such a fast pace we have never experienced compared to an earlier era.
