At Biin, we’ve created an online marketplace that helps you rent storage space from locals. We like to call it, peer to peer storage. Similar to Airbnb’s concept ( peer to peer accommodations,) Biin is using peer to peer storage to change the future of the storage industry. To prepare you for your first experience with Biin, here’s a guide with everything you need to know about storing with locals.

What’s Peer to Peer Storage?

Peer to Peer storage refers to rentable space — such as spare rooms, garages, sheds, or more — in or around someone’s home, that’s used to store personal items for a period of time. Simply put, it gives you the option to rent storage space from other residents in your area — instead of leasing from a traditional storage facility. With Biin, rentable space is offered by hosts all over your city. It’s affordable, conveniently located, and you only pay for what you need.

What items cannot be stored?

For your safety and the safety of your host and their space, items such as live plants and animals, perishables, flammable liquids, explosives, and drugs cannot be stored.

Who sets the cost?

Total costs will vary based on storage dates, location, size, and amenities, and are determined by the host. Typically, costs are much lower than traditional storage rates, saving you money each time you rent storage on Biin.

How secure are spaces?

Available space will vary from fully secured (alarmed security systems, lock & key) to outdoor. Listings will describe the security of the space and it’s up to you to select the most suitable listing for your items. Biin makes finding the right space quick and easy.

How can I access my things?

Each host will set the access rules for their space. You’ll be able to view these rules in the listing before you make your reservation. While your belongings are stored, you can message hosts directly to schedule a time to access your items whenever you need.

Is vehicle storage available?

Vehicle storage may be available depending on your location. Search listings in your area to find a space that fits your needs. In order to store a vehicle, it does need to be running, registered and insured.

What amenities are available?

Amenities will vary based on the available space. Listings will describe in detail all features and amenities. Amenities may include climate control, tarps, car covers, dollies, locks and more.

How do I move in and out?

Moving dates are scheduled before booking. it is your responsibility to move in, store, and move out your items safely. You will need to ensure your items are properly packed so as to keep disruption to a minimum on moving day. As a courtesy, when you move out, make sure to leave your space tidy and undamaged.

Other things to think about when renting with locals

Dates: If you can, reserve your storage space at least 90 days in advance. Searching, comparing prices, and booking in advance makes moving in and out of storage stress-free and fast.

Budget: Before you hop on Biin, know how much money you want to spend on storage space. Factor in travel costs (getting to and from the storage space,) any additional amenities you’d like, and the size you need.

Insurance: You’ll want to make sure your items are insured through homeowners or renters insurance. If your items aren’t covered by insurance, Biin will help you find insurance that protects your items while they’re in storage.
