EarthThinx: Designing The Solutions That Empower People To Act To Heal Spaceship Earth

At the dawn of the 4th Industrial Revolution, Earth’s four subsystems (ocean, land, air, near space) are exponentially deteriorating and in immediate need of major course correction immediately! There is a critical need to help people change their individual behavior, businesses to implement permanent sustainable practices, governments to respond with agility, and all to rely on the same set of data and insights when making informed policy priorities and choices.

Compounding the physical changes in the earth, the rapid acceleration and emergence of open source digital technologies like the internet of things, robotics, 3D printing, cognitive and quantum computing and the growing 30+ zettabytes of available data reservoirs are altering every aspect of society. The future is here it is simply not distributed evenly.

Sitting in opposition to all of these exciting human advances and accessibility to technology are three disruptive truths.

  1. Truth: We Have The Urgency of Time: Climate change has begun to irreversibly transform life on Earth, as 2016 was the hottest year ever recorded surpassing records set in 2015 and 2014 (NASA and NOAA). To avoid catastrophic collapse, global scientific consensus requires full decarbonization of our energy systems and zero net greenhouse-gas emissions by around 2070. Toward this goal, more than 150 governments submitted plans to reduce carbon emissions by 2030, but these commitments may be insufficient to avoid collapse. All agree that another 2o Celsius increase will be catastrophic to most of the Earth’s subsystems. We have run out of time.
  2. Truth: Data overabundance and lack of intuitive solutions: We are producing a distracting 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day. Humans are looking for a needle in a data haystack to find answers to how to take daily action. People feel powerless and paralyzed under this mountain of data.
  3. Truth: Insufficient scale — skills and solutions: 1200 climate scientists are interpreting data for 7.4 billion people, a ratio of 1:6.2 million. Complicating matters, there is also a shortage of digital capabilities to design elegant solutions.

Armed with these inconvenient truths we ventured to share a uniting idea and vision for a collective solution at one of the most inspiring events I attend every year, C2 Montreal. This gathering offered the perfect place to engage leaders, inventors, makers and media with a simple question:

If we had collective Operating System for the Earth could we heal and regenerate Spaceship Earth?

This platform not only realizes Buckminster Fuller’s vision of an operating manual for Spaceship Earth, it uses cognitive computing and self-learning systems that apply data mining, pattern recognition and natural language processing to monitor Earth’s pulse, accelerate real-time understanding, scale expert earth and climate scientist skills and insights from zettabytes of Earth’s open source data from its four subsystems, oceans, land, atmosphere, and near space, and provide ubiquitous accessibility across all connected nomadic devices. More importantly, we are designing EarthThinx™ to be a synergistic platform that accelerates and scales existing climate action initiates by connecting them to the voice of earth.
