With so many different styles in home decorating, one of the easiest to create is shabby chic. The shabby chic décor trend has been around for quite some time, and the ability for you to find inexpensive pieces and personalize your space into a romantic French country paradise is as easy as 1,2,3! We have put together a few tips and tricks to get you started down the path to making your space feel romantic, country and cottage like in a few easy steps.

Living Space

You do not need to fill an entire space with distressed, vintage, and country furnishings to get the look of shabby chic. Start instead with a statement piece and incorporate it into your room. For a living room, for instance, start with a coffee table that you can center in the room. Shabby chic furniture is usually a heritage color such as cream, pale green, duck egg blue or light gray. The soft color palette is simple to integrate with any of your current furniture. Use the table to show off other trinkets or add a romantic table cloth.

The Boudoir

If you want to showcase a shabby chic decor in your bedroom, start with ruffles and layers. The romantic elements of ruffles and lace pair perfectly with distressed, country and vintage items. Change out your nightstand or add a vintage lamp onto your current one for immediate impact. Add textures such as burlap, wicker, or woven elements to throw pillows, storage containers, or floor coverings.

Bathrooms

The bathroom is a great place to start playing with shabby chic design. Bathrooms are one of the smallest rooms in the home, but the cost of changing the feel to a shabby chic look is minimal. Try using crates with chicken wire for storage. Add seltzer bottles and French perfume bottles to a small tray on your vanity. You can find small items that you can use for storage or add a cottage/country shower curtain to start you off.

Kitchen Ideas

The Kitchen is a perfect place to decorate in a shabby chic fashion. Distressed cabinet doors and old French cupboards create the backdrop for a rustic yet feminine kitchen space. Kick it up a notch by adding a vintage pot holder above your island or splurge on a set of vintage dishes. Look for an ornate light fixture to place above the kitchen table and pair it with a worn, distressed farm table for incredible impact.

Shabby Chic decorating is a lot of fun to create. You can find items at local shops, flea markets, and in your own home. Don’t hesitate to try combining your current furniture with old world charm and before you know it, you will be well on your way to embracing the shabby chic design lifestyle.
