Filipinos are rare breed of people. It may not be visible on the outward appearance, but it’s crystal clear within, deep in their hearts. They possess such characteristics which make them unique among other people of different races. Filipino people are resilient. When faced with challenges and hardships, they don’t just sit back and accept defeat; rather they stand up and fight yet again. And what’s more admiring, is that they still get to smile and enjoy life amidst the pain they are feeling. Filipinos of all ages are also respectful towards their fellowmen especially to the elderly, which as we all know, are very rare among people in other countries. More than that, Filipinos are also distinguished with strong family ties. Filipino families seem to be stronger than their problems, as they still remain intact and tougher than before.

But, do you know what trait endears the Filipinos more to the rest of the world? It’s their HOSPITALITY.

Filipinos are renown all over the world for their hospitality and heart-warming generosity. They accommodate guests and even strangers in such a warm and pleasant way. Even before the Philippines was colonized by Spain, this trait was already practiced by our ancestors. The Datus warmly welcomed foreign people who, at that time landed in our country to barter and trade. Spaniards were also treated in the same way when they first came, and the good relationship between both parties lasted before things got out of hand.

Up until now, Filipinos’ great hospitality is still practiced. Whenever guests arrive at their homes, they do almost everything just so the guests would feel most comfortable. One of the family members would offer them slippers so they’d feel warm and relaxed. Of course, as soon as they enter the house, the owner would offer them to sit on their most “durable” type of chair to give them comfort, as well. This gesture wouldn’t be complete without food to offer the visitors. But what if there’s not a single food left at home? No worries. Pinoys will always find a way. And they will do that much just so they can serve you, for free, nothing to expect in return.

Filipinos have a naturally caring and sympathetic mindset, thus they’re hospitable. However, Filipino hospitality isn’t only expressed to locals alike. It is also exemplified in regard to foreign guests. An American once wrote in his blog, Truly, the Filipino people are the most “take their shirt off their back for you” kind of people I have ever met. I have known lots of cultures and this really stood out to me about them (him pointing out Filipino hospitality).

Hospitality is not just about Filipinos’ mere generosity and friendliness to other people. Actually, there’s more to it. The moment they welcomed you home, is the moment when you became a part of their family. They may not give you the kind of life you’ve lived, but they can give you memories, love, and care even for a short moment, and that’s what makes it extra special. That’s what makes a family.

There’s just one thing to be concerned of about this whole thing. Yes, this trait isn’t only confined to the upper classes, it is found among the poorest as well. These people tend to share even the last bowl of rice and last fish with that person who comes to their bamboo hut.

Indeed, this trait runs in the blood of every Filipino. It has become part of our culture and lives, and I believe it’s something we Filipinos should be proud of, something that we should take honor to the next generations.
