California United to Take on Dublin City in First Premier League Golf Event
Can you imagine that headline? I can especially when no one will care about golf until April.
What if the game of golf announced that in 2015 there would be a Premier League of golf? What if next fall California United led by Phil and Keegan battled Dublin City, led by Rory and GMac?
I think a few million fans would tune in. The idea of weekly battles between the best players in the world leading up to a new kind of March Madness is almost too much for this crazy golf fan to handle.
This may sound drastic, but golfers should be worried and should consider drastic measures as the courses across the country sit empty and junior golf programs are dying.
The bottom line is that only playing the best type of golf format once a year must change. To change this ten player teams could face each other in a Ryder Cup format for six months in between The PGA Championship and The Masters. The FedEx Cup is a joke and trying to turn golf into Nascar is an unbelievably bad idea.
The only thing people in golf are talking about now is if Tom Watson was too hard on the Americans after they were whipped on Saturday. Should Tom have not laughed at a silly trophy signed by the team when they were playing for the real trophy? Should Tom not have called out their poor play in the four ball matches? Heck yes Tom should have said that was a stupid gift and torn into those pampered millionaires! What did they want a party Saturday night? Tom Watson was acting like any coach in the futbol or football world would have done.
What I want to see are more pressure packed matches where Phil can help form his team and go to battle against the elite around the world on the best courses in the world. More crazy press conferences where a battle weary Phil spouts out more wildness and Tiger gets to really see if he is the Michael Jordan of golf.
Wouldn’t it be great to imagine the potential of golf in a Premier League format. The San Diego Arsenal taking on Sergio’s Real Madrid. Ricky Fowler leading the Oklahoma Thunder United against Dufner and the Southern Tigers of Alabama.
All of these matches buzzing around on different golf channels would be the sensory overload the modern viewer is searching for on t.v.. One game or one match is not enough for the modern mind. Technology is ready to handle more pressure and more games. It is now time to give us more drama for the game of golf.
Tiger, Phil, Jordan, Rory, and GMac I am calling out to you to save the game. Bring us the 2015 Golf Premier League! Television execs should also be excited about a $300 Premier League Golf Ticket that could be sold world wide.
