Confidence may seem like an elusive trait. Some people seem to be born with it, while others struggle to find it throughout their lives. However, confidence is not something that is reserved for the lucky few. Anyone can learn to be more confident with the right mindset. Here are some hopefully helpful tips on how to boost your confidence:

  1. Identify your strengths

Everyone has something they are good at. Identify your strengths and focus on them. When you focus on what you are good at, you feel more confident, accomplished, and able to make an impact. Make a list of your strengths and refer to it often to remind yourself of your abilities.

2. Practice self-care

Self-care is essential for boosting confidence. Take care of your body by eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. When you feel good physically, you feel better mentally (I actually have another article focusing more on this if you’re interested). Take time to do things you enjoy, such as reading a book, playing a game, taking a relaxing bath, or going for a walk.

3. Challenge negative thoughts

Negative thoughts can create a significant barrier. When you have a negative thought, challenge it by asking yourself if it is true. For example, if you think you are not good enough for a promotion at work, ask yourself if that is really true. What evidence do you have to support that thought? Often, negative thoughts are not based on reality, and challenging them can help you see things more positively.

4. Practice positive self-talk

Positive self-talk is a powerful tool for boosting confidence. Instead of criticizing yourself, try to speak to yourself in a positive way. For example, instead of saying, “I’m not good at this,” try saying something like, “I’m learning, and I’ll get better with practice.” Repeat positive affirmations to yourself regularly, such as “I am capable,” “I am confident,” and “I believe in myself.”

5. Set achievable goals

Setting achievable goals is a great way to boost confidence. When you set goals and achieve them, you feel more accomplished and confident. Start by setting small/short-term goals that you can achieve quickly. As you achieve these goals, set bigger goals that challenge you but remain achievable.

6. Celebrate your accomplishments

When you achieve a goal, celebrate your accomplishment. In fact, invite your friends/family to celebrate with you (even if that sounds kind of funny)! Take time to acknowledge your hard work and success. Celebrating your accomplishments helps you build confidence and reinforces your belief in yourself.

7. Surround yourself with positive people

Surrounding yourself with positive people is huge. Spend time with the people who support and encourage you. Avoid people who are negative or overly critical of you. When you surround yourself with positive people, you are absolutely more likely to feel good about yourself.

8. Take risks

Taking risks can be scary, but it can also be a great way to boost your confidence. When you take risks, you challenge yourself and prove to yourself that you are capable of doing new things, and even things that may have seemed impossible at the beginning. Start small by taking a small risk, such as trying a new hobby. As you become more comfortable with taking risks, take bigger risks that challenge you and push you to better yourself.

9. Learn new skills

Learning new skills can be a great thing! When you learn new skills, you prove to yourself that you are capable of doing new things. Take a class, read a book, or watch a video tutorial to learn a new skill. As you become more skilled, you will feel more confident.

10. Accept failure

Finally, it is important to accept failure as a part of life. I think most of us could benefit from reframing our thoughts/relationship with failure. Everyone “fails” at some point, but it is how you handle failure that matters. Instead of dwelling on your failures, learn from them and move on. Accepting failure helps you build resilience and confidence.

Remember, confidence is not a fixed trait; it can be developed and strengthened with practice. Start small, and gradually work your way up to bigger challenges. The more you practice being confident, the easier it will become. It’s important to keep in mind too that confidence is not about being perfect or having all the answers. It’s about believing in yourself and your abilities, even when things don’t go as planned. Hoping this is helpful to someone out there — I believe in you!!!
