A letter to my son in 2033
For our sons’ first birthday my wife, Caitlyn and I asked friends and family to write Layton a letter that he will read on his 18th birthday, November 24, 2033. Here is my (abbreviated version) letter to Layton.
It’s been a year since you’ve joined your mom and I — life is good.
You’ve traveled to the beach, the mountains, the country and the city. We’ve been on long hikes to lakes and rivers, bike rides to the park and road trips to the desert. All along the way, you’ve had your fur-sister Oakley along your side. She adores you so much.
During your first year, you’ve been surrounded by some of the most loving, caring and thoughtful people I’ve ever known. I can honestly say that you are what brings joy to all of us. There is something contagious about your smile that spreads throughout all of those around you. I hope that you never lose that smile.
You have a gentle and kind soul, it shines through everyday we wake up. You love to eat bananas, eggs and toast. You have a great appetite. Even though you’re not a “morning person”, you show us love and positive energy each day.
You’ve learned to say ‘ball’, ‘kitty’, ‘dadda’, and ‘momma’. You tried to walk — your determination was amazing and inspiring. You cheers me with your sippy cup. You high-five me. You lean in for kisses. You crawl into my arms for hugs.
I can’t tell the future, but whatever happens to us my love and admiration for you will never change. You’ve taught me so much about what it means to care for someone else, and you’ve rewarded me with an unbreakable bond and friendship that is essence of our young family.
I love you,
