I’m thinking of beginning a publication based on using the dictionary to provide a writing prompt. People are always searching for writing prompts, and this one sits like a huge boulder on the edge of Literary World, just giving and giving and giving…

I digress. Nevertheless, I promise you that the feelings, memories or opinions the “next word in the dictionary” often unearths is astounding.

So I write an essay every day, addressing the obligatory word. Now mind you, I do not have to discuss the word’s definition, but I do have to use the word at least once in the essay. (The rules of the game. I invented ’em, and now I can’t change ’em.)

Still…could anything be easier? And if I offered a prize for the best essay on the next word, would you join me in making the attempt?

Well, no matter — you don’t have to answer (though I may deem you rude).

So here’s one from Old Noah I encountered last week that really got me going. The word was cussing — and here’s the essay:

Cussing: (n) the act of using profanity in speech

Since I am not God — and not particularly piously positioned — I do have sins I think are worse than others. But as a child, I was taught that all sins were equal…
