Have you ever dreamed of one day turning one of your childhood memories into reality? That is exactly what the creator of Campbellball Kelly Campbell did. He always dreamed of having a baseball field in his backyard. What started 22 years ago with a few guys playing home run derby with a plastic bat, wiffleball, and trash can lids has turned the city of Cookeville, Tennessee upside down. Over the years thousands of people from all ages, talent level, and backgrounds have come out to play. At the beginning of each game the teams are not chosen by captains based upon skill level, but simply with red and black checkers placed in a hat with each player drawing them out. Throughout the game each player also rotates positions throughout the field so everyone gets a chance to be in on the action. There is now a real baseball like feel with bases, a fence, dugouts, concession stands, and even a Hall of Fame. The old saying “Build it and they will come,” is an understatement when it comes to this great backyard baseball game. Kelly however always wanted to make sure it was just not a game, but a ministry. It was a way of inviting people to just come play, have fun, and for once not worry about the score and who wins. Friendships and memories have been made and kept over the years. If you ever have a chance to go play this is an opportunity you do not want to pass up. Feel free to also check out their website www.campbellball.com for more details.

Have you ever been told you are not qualified or simply just not good enough? I know I have on many occasions. How does that make you feel? Do we not to just fit in or show someone what we are capable of? We can definitely learn many life lessons from the people and the game of Campbellball. First, what would our world look like if we accepted each other for who they are and stop judging them from the outside? We each are designed and created for greatness. No one has the same story to tell so why do we put limits on others when it is not our right to do so. Secondly, it is not always about winning. Do you remember that third game you won in Little League when you were 8? Of course not, but I bet you remember your Dad taking you out for ice cream after the game. The impact we can have on others throughout a game can leave a lasting impression on them so look for those opportunities and instead of looking at the scoreboard. Lastly, be willing to chase your dreams. Kelly could have easily laughed at the idea of turning his backyard into a baseball field, but think of all the memories lost, friendships not made, and lives changed. What may seem small at the time could have an everlasting impact. What will you do now? Please share your story with me because I would love to hear it.
