Day 17 Mapbox, #ExploreOutdoors18, and a missing Main Camera that caused Unity to crash

Time to make my own Unity landscape for my skiing game. I believe Day 16 and maybe 15 I was also doing this. I have been busy however taking the Unity Mapbox Udemy Course making a game where you make a droid pokemon like game.

So lets get to it.

Step 1.

First off I watched a fun video to add the location based game map to Unity.

So lets get started.

I added the location based game map to unity

Step 2.

Add terrain, give it a collider so that objects can interact with it.

Excellent it has elevations. But the buildings and trees need to be raised

Step 3.

Add some Features to the map

Turn on Map Layers (use Mapbox Streets)

Add a feature layer for buildings

Add a collider for trees.

Its seems complicated and didnt work but lets see if I can figure it out.

I am going to load Mapbox’s DataExplorer and use this scene. I learned a bit more about adding assets as Vector Layers I will explain in later days when I can move assets I got off the Unity Store (see step xxx) into them.

Lets put in a ski town

Breckinridge Colorado

…. the camera isn’t moving :( :(

I needed to turn on the “Snap Map to Zero” checkbox and now it works!!!

Step 3.

Before we go all ski-Tastic lets throw in something to see if the landscape looks good on a first person perspective. Im going to go ahead and add the TestTrack scene you get when you first download Unity.

Next I am going to combine these two scenes together by taking the Lighting, Vehicles, Spawn Points, and the camera from Test Track and put them in DataExplorer.

It seems that the car starts below the surface of the map so its falling out of the sky…. so I made the position of the car higher and turned on colliders for all the map features

Looks like I crashed Unity again.

Stupid main camera that i removed…

Looks like its 8:02 and I reached the deadline for the #ExploreOutdoors18 and my Unity has completely crashed.

O well. 4 months till ski season to get my ski map game up and running

Step xxx.

Eventually I was going to put these items in from the unity asset store

Time Spent: 2 hours

Total Time in Unity: 20 hours? I lost track
