I highly recommend running Crouton on an affordable laptop for web development. Battery power and display are most important to me, with performance following closely after.
I run ubuntu Trusty via crouton on my Toshiba 2 Chromebook without a gui desktop environment, just a cli install with vim and tmux. Since all my code gets pushed to github, the computer itself is totally replaceable. Costs around $250, which lets me bring it to way more places, since Im not afraid of losing a $2k piece of equipment.
Im using an older laptop, but the newer Acer r13 has way more battery life, plus usb c charging, for about $100 more new. These can be snagged refurbished for about $300!
The Toshiba 2 (2015 edition) has meh battery (8.5 hours), but much better performance than the two above, plus you can upgrade the SSD to whatever size you want.
