The paper seems to present a new calculation which tends to confirm the Giant Impact hypothesis. But the hypothesis itself is not all that recent, having originally been proposed by George Darwin, the son of Charles, then renewed in the 1970s. These articles on medium are always nicely done, tho, with big, colorful illustrations, which I appreciate.
