Sometimes you just have to jump in, start working and learn as you go. Well, that is one approach. The other approach is to plan every move, every step and every action. Kind of boring right? Well, this approach does make the process run efficient and smooth - and that is how I like to roll.
Here is my task analysis of painting my living room wall.
Define the issue > Develop a Solution > Create the Process for that Solution > Determine a Plan to Execute the Task > Implement the Plan
1. Define the Issue — My living room wall has old and cracking paint. The task is I need to repaint the living room walls.
2. Develop a Solution — What needs to be done and how?
3. Solution Process — Define every step of how this task gets complete. This is where my task analysis begins.
I needed to contact anyone involved with my apartment. I contacted the landlord who gave me his blessings and allowed me to paint the wall. I had to convince my roommate that the wall should be painted and that we would split the cost of materials. He agreed.
4. Determine a Plan of Execution — We had to make a decision on color, create a list of materials needed and create a list of labor tasks. My task analysis resumes with a list of labor tasks.
First order of business is to create a working space. I cleared out the furniture. I prepped all of the floor and ceiling panels with masking tape and laid out cloth to prevent any stains on the floor. I cleaned and touched up the walls with spackle. Before painting I sanded and cleaned the walls again. I painted two coats and I was finished.
Prep work is never fun but is totally necessary when completing any task, job or project. Creating a task analysis and implementing that methodology will save time- and time is something we just cannot get back.
