Homework 4/3

Chapter Two Summary:

In chapter two of Telling The Story, it claims that news is consumed differently today than it was only thirty years ago.

While the medium that people consume news from is different in today’s society, the amount of people consuming the news is increasing rapidly. This is due to the ease and speed of today’s mobile devices, which is what most people use to consume breaking news.

The chapter explains that there are different types of news audiences, ranging from traditionalist to the disengaged. The largest and oldest audience are the traditionalists, who consume news for multiple hours a day.

The change in media consumption habits is due to the growing mistrust of legacy media. Many people distrust the reporters or think that they are heavily biased. This mistrust is growing, however, there seems to be no clear reason why that is the case.

Because of the rise of online media, newspapers are not the money-making giants they once were. Now newspapers have to come up with new ways to reach out to consumers. Network stations are also seeing a decline in viewership due to the increasing amount of online content.

Citizen journalism has been an invaluable part of the news organization in recent years. Journalists are able to learn new information while being able to interact with the reader. Many news organizations are allowing citizens to upload their own content to share with the world.

What does this mean to me?

This chapter allowed me to understand how the media has changed in recent years, and how it will keep changing so that journalists will be able to present the news in a forward-thinking and concise way. I believe that online media is how people will mainly consume the news in the near future. Online content allows journalists to upload a story at an accelerated rate.
