The Good Dog

When she traveled far away
Across the foreign land
She wined and dined with many
From the mountains to the sand
She made a hundred new friends
Of the type she’d never guessed
But she missed the most the good dog
The good dog was the best

And when he came to entertain
The weak not feeling well
There were tricks and jokes and cards
And great stories he would tell
But the one who simply stole the show
Who made them laugh, impressed
The star? Of course, the good dog
The good dog was the best

And when she went out running
In the middle of the night
She carried what she needed
And she always brought a light
On occasion there were shadows
But would never come the test
Beside her ran the good dog
And the good dog was the best

And when he circled watching
Every shift in solitude
Sometimes there were sirens, shouts
Sometimes a fight ensued
He responded each time quickly
And he always wore his vest
And with backup came the good dog
And the good dog was the best

And when came time to say goodbye
Was the good dog’s turn to rest …
They stayed until the very end
Because the good dog was the best
And when sometimes they remember
They may pause or sound obsessed
But it’s because they knew a good dog
And the good dog was the best
