With the increasing demand for privacy, security, and performance, more users are considering the switch to alternative operating systems. Linux, a free and open-source operating system, has been offering a variety of distributions that cater to different needs. Among them, POP!_OS is my personal choice. In this article, we will discuss the advantages of using Linux over Windows or macOS and why POP!_OS is the ideal choice for a daily driver operating system.

Reasons to Switch to Linux from Windows or macOS

I personally used a Mac OS machine for years and loved it. However, I’ve made the switch to Linux as my daily driver. I still keep my Macbook pro around, and use it on occasion for certain things, but 99% of my usage is on my POP!_OS machine.

  1. Open Source: Linux is open source, which means its source code is freely available to the public. This allows users and developers to modify and redistribute the software, leading to a collaborative environment where improvements and innovations are continually made.
  2. Privacy: Mac OSX is no doubt more secure by default than Linux. I’m not going to argue that. However, that security comes at the cost of constant telemetry being sent back to Apple about our usage. OSX is calling back to apple every 1–2 seconds to check in. Most linux distributions collect very little telemetry, and what is collected by default is easily disabled. I prefer to use my machine and not feel like every action I make is being logged to then sell more things to me. I prefer not to be the product. Microsoft Windows is no better.
  3. Customization: Linux offers a high level of customization, allowing users to tailor the operating system to their needs and preferences. This is especially beneficial for those who like to tinker with their systems or want a personalized experience.
  4. Cost: Linux distributions are generally free of charge, which makes them an attractive option for budget-conscious users.
  5. Performance: Linux is well-known for its efficient use of system resources, resulting in faster performance and better responsiveness compared to Windows or macOS.

So what is POP!_OS?

POP!_OS is a Linux distribution developed by System76, a company that specializes in creating Linux-based computers. Launched in 2017, POP!_OS is based on Ubuntu, one of the most popular Linux distributions. While it shares many similarities with Ubuntu, POP!_OS includes several unique features and improvements that set it apart.

Key Differences Between POP!_OS and Ubuntu

  1. User Interface: One of the most noticeable differences between POP!_OS and Ubuntu is the user interface. POP!_OS uses the GNOME desktop environment with a customized theme and layout, providing a polished and visually appealing user experience. In contrast, Ubuntu uses its own customized version of GNOME, featuring the Yaru theme and a distinct set of icons.
  2. Workflow Enhancements: POP!_OS incorporates several workflow improvements, such as auto-tiling windows, keyboard-driven navigation, and a customizable workspaces system. These features streamline multitasking and improve overall productivity, offering an optimized experience compared to Ubuntu’s more traditional desktop environment.
  3. Driver Management: POP!_OS includes a more streamlined approach to driver management compared to Ubuntu. The operating system offers dedicated NVIDIA and AMD/Intel ISO images, making it easier to install the appropriate graphics drivers during the initial setup. This simplifies the process and eliminates potential compatibility issues.
  4. Package Management: While both POP!_OS and Ubuntu utilize the APT package management system, POP!_OS does not force users to adopt the Snap package manager. This gives users the freedom to choose the package management system that best suits their needs, offering greater flexibility in software installation and management.
  5. Customized Applications: POP!_OS comes with a curated selection of pre-installed applications that differ from those included in Ubuntu. This selection aims to provide users with essential productivity tools while maintaining a minimal install, ensuring optimal system performance.

Why POP!_OS is the Perfect Daily Driver Operating System

  1. Minimal Install: POP!_OS comes with a minimal installation, providing a clean and clutter-free workspace. This allows you to add only the applications and packages youneed, reducing system bloat and optimizing performance.
  2. No Forced Snap Package Manager: Unlike some other Linux distributions, POP!_OS does not force users to adopt the Snap package manager. This is a personal preference, but I don’t care for snap and prefer to use flatpak instead.
  3. User-friendly: POP!_OS is designed with ease of use in mind, making it an ideal choice for users who are new to Linux. The operating system features a visually appealing interface and intuitive navigation that simplifies the transition from other operating systems.
  4. Hardware Compatibility: POP!_OS, developed by System76, ensures seamless compatibility with their hardware products. However, it also works well with a wide range of hardware from other manufacturers, making it a versatile choice for various systems.
  5. Gaming and Productivity: With native support for Steam and excellent compatibility with gaming platforms like Lutris and Wine, POP!_OS is a suitable choice for gamers. Additionally, the operating system comes with robust productivity tools, making it ideal for both work and play.

Conclusion

POP!_OS is an excellent choice for users seeking a daily driver operating system that offers privacy, customization, and performance. Its minimal installation, user-friendly interface, and compatibility with various hardware make it a standout option among Linux distributions. If you’re considering a switch from Windows or macOS, give POP!_OS a try and experience the benefits of a secure, efficient, and versatile operating system.
