Back in the late 60’s it was all about components. Smart people at companies like Intel, Fairchild Semiconductor and Texas Instruments trying to make their mainsframe computers smaller and more relaible invented things like microprocessors and multi layered printed circuit boards. These components would continue to shrink in size and grow in power over the following 4 decades, a change now refered to as moore’s law after intel’s Gorden Moore.
The next generation would take these components and builds smaller and faster computers until in the 80’s we get the first personal computer. No one cared about components any more, it was all about hardware. Apple, IBM, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell.
Then in the 90’s a new genertion of teenagers began to work out what the hardware was for. As the hardware got smaller and the internet arrived the focus shifted to software. Opensource code and API’s for everyhting from maps to payment processing made it possible for a new generation of companies to build and scale in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the cost.
In the 2000’s we saw the genesis of a 3rd phase. Personal data components. Software companies packaging personal data in an accessable form. Social data in the form of facebook friends or iPhone contacts was made availabe through API’s to developers wanting to expedite on-boarding. This has allowed dating service or social applications to built better products with less work.
Over the next few years we’ll see more data components created and the focus will shift again to a new generation of data services, companes that don’t exist today. Companies founded to derive value from disparate, previously detached data sets. Our doctor will access our sodoim intake because our purchase data will iclude nutritional information, parsed by one of many possible intermediarys into the relevant format. This development has application at the macro level giving researches and governments realtime, actionable data. As companies and governments store increasing volumes of date from a growing number of data points it’s important that frameworks are created and protocalls designed that allow the next generation of data service companies to emerge.
