How to sell your products online for less than £10 a month

There’s lots of things to consider like secure web hosting complete with the correct SSL license, storage space and a safe payment gateway for your customers. What if we were to tell you that you can safely sell through your website for less than £10 a month (not including your usual web hosting fee).

Shopify, one of the world’s largest eCommerce platforms offer ‘Shopify Lite’ that allows business to sell their wares on their own website. Payments are taken via their secure payment gateway or through PayPal for a small fee giving you peace of mind and a happy customer. You simply create a product on your website and then create the same product inside the Shopify backend. You then copy and paste the code from Shopify into your web page and hey presto a ‘Buy Now’ button appears. When a customer clicks on this button they are taken to a secure checkout to complete the purchase either through Shopify payments or through PayPal.

It’s worth noting that if you choose Shopify Payments over PayPal to handle the transaction then they waiver the 2% transaction fee (1). Shopify do take a handling fee of 2.2% + 20p per order but this again is cheaper than the 3.4% + 20p PayPal charge as their transaction fee (2).

Real world example — Francis of Fran’s Time Pieces sells his luxury watches online. He sells them at £500 each and sells on average 20 watches a month. He sells through ‘Shopify Lite’ but at the checkout he doesn’t use Shopify Payments, he uses PayPal to handle the transaction.

Shopify charges 2% of the £500 sale for using PayPal = £10

Paypal charges 3.4% + 20p for the transaction = £17.20

Total charge = £27.20 on the £500 sale.

Francis now uses Shopify Payments to handle his transaction:

Shopify waivers the transaction fee = £0

Shopify charges a handling/order fee of 2.2% + 20p = £11.20

Total charge = £11.20 on the £500 sale.

By switching to Shopify Payments from PayPal in ‘Shopify Lite’, Francis saves over £300 a month in transaction fees. No brainer right?

Using Shopify Lite to handle your transaction means you are selling through secure hosting. You are also equipped with their secure payment gateway for the peace of mind of customers. Funding and installing all this yourself on your own website would be well into the thousands so for £10 a month is super cost effective.
