What also surprises me is the lack of monetary value assigned to the environment. Does anybody measure the value of the Amazon (say in the form of CO2 absorption) before it is destroyed, or what it might cost to ‘rebuild’ it, or an equivalent? The (retail) value of food harvested from the ocean is calculated, but the value that is removed from overfishing is not. What might it cost to regenerate fish stocks, and reverse damage done all along the chain (ecosystem, employment of small-business fisheries)?
