Section 3: Social Medias Effect on Socialization
As I stated previously social media has made its way into almost everything that we do today and has a major effect on our socialization as a person and in friendship groups. Speaking from personal experience being from the bush has allowed me to be able to have a conversation with almost anyone and this is something I take great pride in being able to do that. That being said every time I go out and about in the city or when im at university ill enter a food court or a cafeteria and everyone is on their phones being antisocial and not being part of a conversation. But there is also a flip side to that coin as explained on business2community.com “Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, trade ideas, share content and pictures, and many other activities” so with physical, social interaction now almost non-existent due to the introduction of social media and In accordance with www.hastac.org “there is evidence to support the claims that social media is actually harming people’s ability to interact competently in an offline setting” so with this stated its also coinciding with what I stated earlier that social interaction is unfortunately dying. Also on that website –“According to each company’s respective reports, in March 2013, Facebook reported having 1.11 billion active users, Instagram reported having 100 million users, and Twitter had 200 million active users. These numbers have experienced immense growth even in the past year alone. This just proves the fact that social networking is a rapidly changing field, and even if we solve the question of how current social media affects interaction, more questions will continue to arise”- these stats conclude that the ever growing number of people signing onto social media is a highly contributing factor to the death of social interaction.
