Section 5: Problems with Bullying and Online Harassment
When I was growing up all I heard was the threat of cyber bullying and harassment, and finding out that people actually commit suicide as a result of this. So this begs the question what are the big social network companies like Facebook, twitter. According to Wikipedia the definition for cyber bullying covers both “harassment and sexual harassment via electronic means and in a deliberate and repetitive manner”. So back to the question what are these big companies doing about harassment. According to bullying.co.uk Facebook and twitter both have a zero policy on harassment. Facebook has the power to bloke and suspend any depending upon the severity of the harassment, can be reported to authorities. Twitter has a more, “you” approach to harassment stating that “you can block the user. You may find that as they are unable to get through to you, they will lose interest” so twitter take a different approach to harassment that in a way I agree with, if you have a problem with someone it is up to you to do something about it. However Facebook doesn’t, they take the safer more “we’ll handle it” way. Stated by business2community.com — “If you are not careful, unscrupulous people can target you for cyber bullying and harassment on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall prey to online attacks which can create tension and distress”-. So like I’ve stated previously in my posts, social media has wiggled its way into everything we do and it follows its way back into our homes and goes with us everywhere, it’s a terrifying thought.
