Section 6: Social Medias Impact on Privacy

It’s safe to say that everyone now knows that everything you put onto social media can be seen by the entire world if you do not have the correct profile security like we see on Facebook. Stated on business2community.com is says “what you post on the Net can come back to haunt you. Revealing personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc.”. Also stated on searchenginewatch.com a survey was done and it’s quite shocking it goes onto state the following, and I’m quoting.

  • 25%: of households with a Facebook account don’t use the site’s privacy controls or weren’t aware of them.
  • 40 %: of social network users posted their full date of birth online, opening themselves up to identity theft.
  • 9 %: of social network users dealt with a form of abuse within the past year (e.g., malware, online scams, identity theft or harassment).

This just goes to show that only 26% of people online have some sort of protection for their online identity, and this is a very startling result as stated above with the risk of identity theft and different types of harassment.
