Debt and Gratitude
We’ve been given more than we can ever give.
To start, we’re born helpless. We can’t survive a few days without the aid of someone else. And we remain helpless — or nearly so — for years afterward.
But that’s not all we’re indebted for. Every comfort we enjoy — cars, clothes, computers, carpet, cups (just to name a few that being with “c”) — exists because people who lived before us worked to make it. Billions of lives contributed to the wonders we enjoy.
We’ll never be able to give more than we’ve been given. And that means our default attitude through life should be one of gratitude.
This is part of a November series about gratitude. To read the October series, which is about death, click here. Or see the full list.
