Female bass players are a gift from God.

Female artists play more melodic, fret well beyond the standard tried-and-true basslines, and bring more personal skill to the listener’s ears.

I have listed my favorite musicians considering skill, melodic presence, and innovation.

Esperanza Spaulding

The Portland, Oregon native has a busy schedule since the release of her first album in 2006, Junjo.

Her sixth album peaked on the Billboard charts, and earned her two Grammy nominations, and a win for best Jazz Vocal album.

Rich rhythmic phrases and vocals make each of her compositions a pleasurable audible journey with many well-laid out twists and turns. Almost Joni Mitchel-like genius.

Listening repeatedly brings out seamless vocal and bass nuisances not previously appreciated.

Fortunate for us, she didn’t pursue the political science degree, and the clarinet!
