Your Business Isn’t Your Profession

The difference between doing what you love and making a real business out of doing what you love.

Your profession and your business are two different things.

I wrote this article for creative professionals, but we can define that term broadly to include anyone with a profession, artistic or otherwise. That can mean artists, architects, attorneys, actors, authors, acupuncturist, or anything in between.

Ultimately, I am talking about anything that requires special skills. Those practicing these skills typically invest a good deal of time, money, and energy to gain them.

Creating a business involves an entirely different set of skills.

The skills to run a business differ entirely from the skills used in rendering professional services. The most skilled do not necessarily have the best company.
