One of the main drivers of disruption in insurance has been the increasing availability of personal data (McCrea & Farrell, 2018). Among the novel emerging data sources, there is the Internet of Things (IoT), a network of intelligent devices connected via the internet (Madakam, Ramaswamy, & Tripathi, 2015). Deciding on a career path in the early years after university can be challenging. It feels that the more you think about it, the more you lose yourself in the dozens of different ways in which you could be living your life. Although the notion of a job for life is slowly dying and being replaced by a lifelong learning approach where the job market expects you to reinvent yourself several times during your working life, getting the first years of your career right can be pivotal in building those future opportunities.

On 9 May 1950, just 5 years after the World War II, Robert Schuman, the French foreign minister at the time, presented the so called Schuman Declaration. He proposed to place French and German production of coal and steel under one common High Authority. Schuman believed that if countries had incentives to cooperate at the economical level, this would allow them to achieve the political goal of peace and prosperity.

“Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.”

Before jumping into the core of the article let me just briefly explain to you why am I doing this. I moved to Brussels 1 month ago to work for the European Economic and Social Committee, an advisory body that represents the voice of organized civil society in the EU. The committee is composed by employer’s groups, trade unions, NGOs, consumer protection associations and various other interest groups who come together to draft opinions on legislation for the European Commission, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament.

Before moving here, my knowledge about the EU was very limited…
